Our DIY Outdoor Patio Sectional

The outdoor patio is by far our favorite corner of our new house. It is the perfect space to drink coffee, do yoga, answer emails… All the things really!

We wanted to create a functional space that also had cozy vibes so we decided to go with a sectional. Originally we were going to buy an outdoor couch, but Patrick found this plan on Ana White’s blog and decided to go for it. It came out so much better than I could’ve imagined and I’m so thankful for husband #PatTheBuilder ;)

The entire sectional is built with 2x4s and we used cedar for the wood. The dimensions and directions can be found here. After assembling the couch together, we sanded all the edges down and put a coat of Behr’s Waterproof Stain and Sealer. The trick is to apply a generous coat then immediately wipe off the access with a soft cloth (we used old t-shirts.) Don’t forget to wear rubber gloves to keep your hands from staining! For seats, we bought two of these 30x72” foam cushions on Amazon and got custom covers made from Slip Cover Shop. You can also buy cushions from Target or Home Depot (like this one!)

After everything, the cost to build this DIY sectional & table set came out to roughly $700. The highest cost was the cedar and we also went a bit fancy with the custom cushions. You can definitely do it for cheaper though! All in all, I think the price was totally worth it because we wanted this space to be perfect and last for a long time. As far as timeline, the entire project took about two days with just a few hours each day. He said it was a pretty easy project so if you’re even remotely handy, you should try it out!

I’m so excited to get more pillows and blankets to cozy up this space. I know we’ll be using it a lot as the weather starts to cool down!
